Road Trip Tips & Tricks
By April Lykins, Travel Advisor
Many family vacations start out fun and cheerful as everyone loads into the car excited to get to their destination. Moments later, it seems no one wants to be touched, the snacks are already gone, and you have to stop for the 15th time for a bathroom break in just a few miles.
How do you survive the family road trip? These tips and tricks may just help you arrive at your destination still wanting to vacation with those you left the house with:
TIP 1 - Leave Early
Leaving very early in the morning gives the family a few more hours to sleep so you can get closer to your destination before everyone wakes up wanting something. I like to split the night with my partner. He stays up and loads everything into the car while I get some sleep. Then I wake up very early, pack him and the kids into the car and hit the road. This gives me at least 4 hours before everyone is awake and wanting something.
Tip 2 - Add Some Time
If possible, break your trip into two days. Any road trip over 10 hours gets broken into two days if I can manage it. We drive as far as we can Day 1 and find a nice hotel to rest our heads. The next morning we wake up and enjoy a nice breakfast before heading to our destination. Now I arrive feeling rested and ready to chase the kids in a new environment. Giving yourself an extra half or full day can actually save you more enjoyable time.
Tip 3 - Keep Going!
Don’t stop at gas stations for bathroom breaks and snacks. These places are convenient, but convenience comes at a price. My trick? I opt for stopping at grocery stores instead! They are normally less busy and we can find an array of snacks at decent prices. Plus, if I forgot something I can easily pick it up here without breaking the bank.
HOT TIP: Don’t forget to use your big box stores. If you have a Sam’s Club membership or Costco membership, these places provide a great reprieve from the car. Stock up on shareable snacks and visit their counter service eateries for everything from pizza to pretzels and unbeatable prices.
Tip 4 - Pack Entertainment
Buy a few items only for the car. Often I will pick up a few destination related travel items or use popular sites like Teachers Pay Teacher to pack a bag for my kids. This may include travel bingo, destination facts, joke cards, and the ever popular 20 questions game ideas.
Remember, life is a journey not a destination, so enjoy it! Get excited about where your family is heading, but keep your sanity until you get there. Take one or all of these tips and be sure to add in your own survival needs. The most important thing is that you are Going! on a uniquely YOU family adventure!
